found this site on monday gateway 97.8fm excelent local coverage give it a try this was from monday ——————–

Thurrock 1-4 Welling

Aveley 3-3 Concord Rangers

Billericay Town 4-4 Bury Town

Canvey Island 1-0 East Thurrock United

Grays Athletic 3-2 Great Wakering Rovers

Tilbury 1-1 Chatham Town

——————–

FULL TIME! And wow, what a second half! The goals and action was non-stop. Superb comebacks by Concord Rangers and Grays Athletic, a great win for Canvey Island, and a really good point for unbeaten Tilbury.

Apologies for lack of Billericay info. The score is purely provisional as the info we were getting was someone less than 100% certain, with scores ranging from 0-0 to 4-4. As soon as it’s confirmed it’ll be up on here (NB – now confirmed as, indeed, 4-4).

It’s been great to be back in the swing of things. This weekend will be the magic of the cup, as the road to Wembley continues. Who is featured depends on the glamour, chances of an upset, and how much I have for bus fares. Until then, enjoy the week, and your football.

——————–

90th+ minute – GOAAAALLLL! ….. Aveley 3, CONCORD RANGERS 3 Oh ye of little faith! Ahem …. Anyway, Danny Subiola comes up with a dramatic qualiser in a dramatic end to a dramatically drama-strewn last 15 minutes!

90th minute – GOAAAALLLL! ….. AVELEY 3, Concord Rangers 2 Yep, there was time for a winner. A home winner, thanks to a Sherwin Stanley penalty. The gits.

89th minute – GOAAAALLLL! ….. Tilbury 1, CHATHAM TOWN 1 Late heartbreak for the Dockers (wasn’t that a recurring theme last season) as they concede a late, late equaliser at Chadfields.

87th minute – GOAAAALLLL! ….. GRAYS ATHLETIC 3, Great Wakering Rovers 2 Eljay Worrell is the hero of the hour (well, the hour and a half) with a follow-up shot after Bunce’s second penalty of the afternoon was saved. A real five goal thriller at Rookery Hill.

84th minute – GOAAAALLLL! ….. Aveley 2, CONCORD RANGERS 2 Oh yes! Oh yes! Nicky Cowley proves he’s no old banger by banging in the equaliser! Is there time for an amazing Concord winner?

79th minute – GOAAAALLLL! ….. CANVEY ISLAND 1, East Thurrock United 0 A hotly disputed Rob King penalty. The Rocks are claim Kye Ruel’s shove on John Easterford was outside the area but, again, the only view that matters is the ref’s. And mine.

76th minute – GOAAAALLLL! ….. Aveley 2, CONCORD RANGERS 1 Game on at Mill Field now too! A penalty from Noone. Something tells me the Beach Boys could be into something good if they can grab another.

73rd minute – GOAAAALLLL! ….. GRAYS ATHLETIC 2, Great Wakering Rovers 2 Oh yes! A penalty from sub Danny Bunce could put the home side bank in the money if they can cash in on another chance. Get in!

69th minute – GOAAAALLLL! …..Grays Athletic 1, GREAT WAKERING ROVERS 2 Erm, no it won’t. It instead means that Grays fall for a sucker punch, going for the winner, through Curran. Doh!

65th minute – GOAAAALLLL! ….. GRAYS ATHLETIC 1, Great Wakering Rovers 1 Yes! Brad Thomas with a vital equaliser. Will that open the floodgates for the dominant Athletic?

65th minute – GOAAAALLLL! ….. Thurrock 1, WELLING 4 From bad to worse now. Thurrock will remain rock bottom of the Conference South this evening after this latest capitulation. Hmmmmm.

62nd minute – GOAAAALLLL! …..Thurrock 1, WELLING 3 It’s going to be another of those days for the struggling Fleet after a bright start. Ho hum.

Attendance: 409 over at Park Lane to watch the feast of football that is Canvey Island v East Thurrock United.

55th minute – Drama at Park Lane as the King of Canvey fires a shot in that East Thurrock’s Simon Peddie deflects away via his hand. Handball, surely? Nope, ball to hand says the ref, and it’s his decision that counts.

48th minute – GOAAAALLLL! ….. TILBURY 1, Chatham Town 0 Blummen well get in! The Dockers continue their fine start to the season against their unbeaten visitors thanks to Mbieye. Hurrah!

4.02pm – KICK OFF! Oh yes!

——————–

HALF TIME: As ever, a mixed bag. Rocks boss John Coventry playing 4-5-1 has worked so far at Canvey. That’s about as good as it gets so far. Grays are on top but again have found a goalkeeper in fine form. Concord, however, need an early second half goal, or it could be an afternoon of futile toil. Right, off for a quick pie and Bovril and back with the action shortly.

44th minute – GOAAAALLLL! ….. Thurrock 1, WELLING 2 Now that’s not playing the game at all. Robbie Garvey, as ever, has work to do at half time shoring up the Fleet after conceding two quick goals to turn the match on its head.

41st minute – GOAAAALLLL! …..Thurrock 1, WELLING 1 No confirmation of the scorer, though we all know he’s a rotten little creep for equalising like that. The rotters.

38th minute - In Ryman One North, it sounds as if it’s all Grays at the moment, with efforts by Cowley, Sweeney and Carlos amongst others, so it’s a case of being patient and the goals might just come. At Park Lane, Canvey’s Jason Hallett hobbles off injured, replaced by Gonnella

Attendance: A very respectable 243 are taking in Grays Athletic‘s struggle against Great Wakering Rovers at Rookery Hill.

30th minute – Bit of a lull in proceedings. In the derby game, Canvey have possession, East Thurrock have the cutting edge, but it’s deadlock. Grays and Concord have to move their respective harrises sharpish.

21st minute – GOAAAALLLL! ….. Grays Athletic 0, GREAT WAKERING ROVERS 1 A bit of a wake-up call at Rookery Hill as the mid-table visitors take an early lead. Plenty of time left, though, boys.

20th minute – GOAAAALLLLL! ….. AVELEY 2, Concord Rangers A disastrous start for the Beach Boys. Did Stanley score for the home side? Sherwin not.

13th minute – GOAAAAALLLLL! ….. THURROCK 1, Welling 0 Exactly what the Fleet wanted and the Ship Lane faithful at last have something to cheer. A mint finish from Cracknell. Kick on!

11th minute – In the big derby game, it’s all Rocks at the moment. Stanley Muguo has missed an easy header and Neil Richmond just failed to score after dispossessing old team mate Steve Sheehan. Canvey need to step it up a bit.

6th minute – GOAAAAALLLL!! ….. AVELEY 1, Concord Rangers 0. Oh bother. Not a good start. In fact the opposite of good. Badissimo. Lee Perry putting the home side ahead. What a sauce.

3.00pm – KICK OFF! Oh yes!

——————–

2.55pm – Team news.

East Thurrock United line up with: Wray, Sammons, Stephen, Wood, Peddie, Muguo, Ruel, Gilbey, Richmond, Cohen, Ramkin.

Concord Rangers face up to Aveley with: D Brightly, A Miller, M Noone, S King, L White, T Campbell, S Dunbar, J Elmes, N Cowley, H Elmes, C French

Tilbury go against Chatham with: Marrable, Mead, S.West, king, Barnes Good, Henty, Mbieye, Malthouse, Bostry & Atkin subs – J.West, Taylor, Cook, Pooley & Crooks

Grays Athletic face Great Wakering Rovers with: Ali Aksoy, Craig Pope, Junior Baker, Bradley Thomas, Lee Flynn, David Cowley, Harry Agombar, Kenny Beaney, Joao Carlos, Jared Small, Joe Sweeney. Subs: Eljay Worrell, Ian Gayle, Danny Bunce, Jason Fontaine, Anthony Ryan.

——————–

2.45pm – ‘So what have you been doing?’ I hear absolutely nobody ask. Well, time has been taken up following Hearts in the SPL, which you may have heard on Gateway Sport the other week, as well as their brief sojourn in Europe, which still lasted longer than the Old Firm’s.

It was also nice to take in some top class rugby. That wasn’t the case at Murrayfield when Scotland struggled pitifully at times against a poor Italy, but certainly was at Wembley in the league code, where Wigan defeated Leeds in a thriller, including a memorable try from inside their own 20 metre line.

It’s nice to have an extended break away from the bread and butter of covering our local sides, too, as it gives you that extra enthusiasm for when you finally get back. If this season’s half as good as last season, it’ll mean 2010/11 was twice as good as 2011/12.

——————–

2.25pm – It’s been a long time, perhaps too long, but welcome one and all to (hopefully, anyway) the first live updates here on Gateway 97.8 Sport this afternoon.

True, the season kicked off some time ago, but a longish break north of the border and trips to other sporting occasions, notably both rugby codes, has meant a delayed start online.

No matter, though, as this afternoon could be a cracker. Ryman Premier newbies East Thurrock United face their first derby at an impressive looking Canvey Island, lowly Concord Rangers have to get something from their trip to Aveley, as do Thurrock when they entertain Welling, Billericay will be looking to cement their decent start at New Lodge, whilst Grays and Tilbury continue their R1N promotion quests.

As ever, keep refreshing the page every few minutes to keep up with all the action and tittle-tattle. Another feature this season, too, is our twitter updates, which you can find by following @GatewayGameLive.

And there you have it. Bring it on!

Bowers Boss Leaves After Bees Derby Demolition
August 11th, 2011 by
Essex Senior League club Bowers & Pitsea have parted company with manager Colin Cook in the aftermath of side’s humiliating 5-2 defeat in the big derby match against Basildon United.

Cook had been at the helm just over two years, in which time he oversaw massive imporovements to the club’s facilities. The avowed aim was Ryman League football in two years but sadly the progress off the pitch was never matched on it, with disappointing bottom half placings.

This season had started with a 3-0 home defeat against Bethnal Green United, and things finally came to a head last night at the Len Salmon Stadium with Basildon United, managed by former Bowers reserve boss Paul Larke, inflicting the biggest derby defeat on Bowers in years.

It was a match too far and so the popular and likeable Colin Cook’s reign as manager came to a sad end.

Fleet Sunk At Seaside As Southend Rule Their Manor
July 30th, 2011 by
Southend Manor 4, Thurrock 0

Pre-season friendlies inevitably bring up a huge variety of results and performances. They are no more than glorified training sessions at first, designed to gauge fitness levels and getting players back into the groove of playing as a team.

After a few weeks, however, you get clear signals of how things are starting to pan out. For Thurrock, after their visit to the Southchurch Park Arena, the alarm bells are ringing loud and clear.

Southend Manor, having already disposed of Great Wakering Rovers earlier in the week, simply tore Thurrock apart. True, many of the Fleet squad were either youth, reserve, or squad players. Worringly, though, the same could also be said for their conquerors. A fair number of the Southend Manor side who won at Burroughs Park were sat in the stand.

The match as a contest was all over in the first 20 minutes. As early as the 6th minute, long serving Manor midfielder Jason Jay headed narrowly wide. The warning wasn’t heeded, and two minutes later, Thurrock failed to defend a free kick and Manor were left with an easy tap-in from inside the the six yard box.

Chief tormentor in the home ranks was midfielder Chris Baddeley, who led the Thurrock players a merry dance. He set up Manor’s second goal in the 17th minute after skinning the full back and crossing for yet another easy tap in from around 8 yards out.

Then 3 minutes later, another Baddeley run down the left ended in a crude, clumsy Fleet tackle in the box. The penalty was duly dispatched and at 3-0 with 20 minutes gone, the game was over and Thurrock were staring humilation in the face.

To be fair to the Fleet , they battled hard from thereon in to try to stay in the game but seldom threatened. The home side kept going forward, led at the front by the imposing figure of Gary Paterson, aided and abetted by the lively ex Basildon United man Jason Jay and wily veteran David Tubbs.

Between them all had shots either well saved or just wide. One vicious free kick from 25 yards out early in the second, in particular, whistled just over the bar after a fine finger-tip save.

It wasn’t until the 74th minute that Thurrock had a chance worthy of the name. After good build-up on the right, a shot from 12 yards out looked like reducing the deficit until a last ditch clearance on the line put paid to their hopes.

Then to round things off, in the 87th minute, after yet another Manor attack, another clumsy tackle came in, and Gary Paterson put away the second penalty of the evening to complete Thurrock’s misery.

Overall, it was a depressing evening for the Ship Lane outfit, with the message coming louder and clearer than any neon sign from Southend’s gaudy seafront: “It will be another long season with perfortmances like that.

As for Manor, after defeating Conference South and Ryman League opposition this week, their message is equally clear: “Watch out.”

Breaking News: Thurrock Given Amazing Conference Reprieve
June 11th, 2011 by
In an extraordinary twist to the football season, Gateway 97.8 Sport understands that Thurrock have amazingly been given a stay of execution in the Conference South – six weeks after their football season has finished.

The Conference board has decided that, because of financial irregularities, for which they were originally fined, Rushden & Diamonds have been expelled from both the Conference AND Conference South.

To ensure that an even number of teams remains in place for 2011/12, the league has decided that the team in the final relegation spot in the Conference South will be allowed to stay up after all. That side is, luckily enough, the Ship Lane outfit.

It is the second time in three seasons that Thurrock have been reprieved after having apparently been relegated. In 2008/09 the Fleet looked certain for the drop, only for the demise of a club elsehwere giving them another chance.

After the trauma of the past campign, which included stints from three different managers, incumbent boss Robbie Garvey will be thinking a corner has been turned. On the evidence of Thurrock’s latest amazing escape, it would appear a whole block rather than corner has been turned.

Breaking News: Julian Dicks Leaves Grays Athletic
May 17th, 2011 by
Perhaps one of the worst kept secrets in non league football has this evening been confirmed.

Gateway 97.8 Sport have been informed that Grays Athletic and manager Julian Dicks are going their separate ways “by mutual consent.”

Since taking over the managerial reins in September 2009, Dicks has overssen the running of the club while turmoil abounded off-pitch, culminating in relegation from the Conference, reignation from the Conference South, a groundshare with East Thurrock United after their New Rec home was sold, and starting afresh in Ryman One North.

After an uncertain start to 2010-11, Dicks eventually guided the team to mid-table comfort, their play-off bid eventually petering out only in the last week of the season. Off the field, things certainly settled down, and it seemed that the corner has just been turned.

If it has, the new road Grays will be beating a path down will be without the likeable ex West Ham hero, whose honesty, integrity and commitment was never in any doubt.

Gateway Sport: Relegation Battle & Play-Offs LIVE
May 7th, 2011 by
Wingate & Finchley 3-2 Brentwood Town
After extra time. 90 minutes 2-2.

Peterborough United 5-0 Dagenham & Redbridge

Notts County 1-1 Brighton & Hove Albion
Southampton 3-1 Walsall

Wycombe Wanderers 3-1 Southend United

Ross County 3-0 Cowdenbeath

——————————

FULL TIME Sadly, no late second comeback. After all that hard slog of a season, Brentwood have nothing to show for it except a pat on the back and the killer ‘Better luck next season’ which nobody ever wants to hear.

As ever, thank you so much for logging on this afternoon, it’s a pleasure to relay what’s going on with our local clubs, and the feedback indicates much more than a few people love finding out on Gateway 97.8

The next live update will probably be next month’s 20twenty international between Australia and India at Billericay (and no, I’m not joking). Until then, enjoy the summer.

INJURY TIME – And willing another final twist to happen down Finchley way.

119 mins – Over at Wembley, my mate Scott reports on a dramatic Darlington winner in the FA Trophy Final.

117 mins – WINGATE & FINCHLEY 3, Brentwood Town 2 Oh no no no. Heartbreak for ‘Wood. They simply couldn’t keep up with the Jones, and he shoots the home side ahead, much to the delight of their huge home support. Gutting – but still time left to change all that.

5.22pm – Extra Time second period – and ….. yep ….. KICK OFF!

Half time Two nervy, tired teams. Pens? The Northern Echo’s excellent chief sports writer, Scott Wilson, is following the updates on here with interest, as he covers Darlo’s Wembley sojourn in the FA Trophy. He says it’s pens there against Mansfield. You simply cannot beat days like this for pure tension.

99 mins – A Terry hat-trick gives Leatherhead a 4-3 lead. Justice, at least, IS being done in R1S.

95 mins – Elsewhere up and down the country, Sunderland make themselves safe from Premier League relegation, West Ham look decidedly unstable after failing to put away Blackburn at home, and Steve Tilson’s Lincoln City drop out of the Football League – so he may perhaps spend a second successive summer on ‘gardening leave’.

5.03pm – Hey, guess what, I was wrong again. For yet another time, KICK OFF!

——————————

90+++ mins – Is justice done? Leatherhead, who finished 23 points clear of Dulwich Hamlet score a late, late, late late equaliser. Extra time it is, then, at both the R1 play-off finals. How dramatic is that??!!

FULL TIME And, sadly, Dagenham & Redbridge are releagted along with Bristol Rovers. What a galling way to go. Southend’s defeat is irrelevant, but we stay on here online for extra time in the play-offs!

90++ mins – WYCOMBE WANDERERS 3, Southend United 1 A ridiculous amount of injury time played gives the hosts the points and promotion.

90+ mins – PETERBOROUGH UNITED 5, Dagenham & Redbridge 0 After an enthralling season trying to stay up, it’s so sad to see the Daggers go down in such a humiliating manner.

INJURY TIME Still time for another dramatic twist somewhere.

89 mins – Up in Scotland, the Staggies turn on the late style, two goals in a minute. Elsewhere Tonbridge lead Lowestoft 4-3 and Dulwich lead Leatherhead 3-2 in the other play-offs, strikerless Sunderland go 2-1 up.

84 mins – PETERBOROUGH UNITED 4, Dagenham & Redbridge 0 Going down with a whimper, sadly. Two goals in two minutes. League Two and derby matches with Barnet and Southend loom. Ah well.

81 mins – Wingate & Finchley 2, BRENTWOOD TOWN 2 Oh yes! Oh yes! Oh yes! Forget the toilet, Butterworth is worth his weight in gold for the ‘Wood with a dramatic equaliser! Extra time? Still time for another twist though!

80 mins – Need the loo but just can’t, getting too sense, this play-off final palaver is no good for the heart – or bowels if you’re the manager, presumably.

75 mins – Nothing has changed in the play-off finals. Have to say, though, 2,400 at Tonbridge v Lowestoft, that is an incredible attendance, and highlights the popularity of local, non league football.

68 mins -Southampton go 3-1 up against Walsall but, again, it’s irrelevant unless there’s a stunning turnaround at London Road. Get your prayer mats out, Dagenham supporters.

65 mins – PETERBOROUGH UNITED 2, Dagenham & Redbridge 0 Oh no. After a brief period of intense Posh pressure, a nice finish from Grant McCann doubles their lead. Is this the dagger through the heart of the Daggers?

60 mins – Ooh, Daggers doing all they can to get that vital goal. Hit the post twice with the Posh keeper beaten all ends up. Time is ticking away though.

51 mins – In the other Play-Off finals, Tonbridge lead Lowestoft 3-2 for a place in the Conference South. Remarkably Dulwich Hamlet, who finished 23 points behind Leatherhead (and 31 behind Bognor, who they knocked out) lead 3-1. Just goes to show the injustice of the play-offs.

4.03pm – For the last time (definitely!) this season – KICK OFF!

——————————

HALF TIME And, sadly, a depressing first 45 minutes for our sides. At least Southend have nothing to play for, but the Daggers simply have to score, and Brentwood will just need to pick things up, although the psychological boost of a goal right on half time could give them an edge. Nothing is won or lost, however, at half time, and there’s still all to play for. Let’s see if our boys can turn it round.

45+ mins – Wingate & Finchley 2, BRENTWOOD TOWN 1 The revival is on! We thought they blew it, but Blewitt has breathed life into the play-off final. Get in!

45+ mins – Julian Gray pulls a goal back for Walsall, but if it stays that way and Dagenham score, it’s irrelevant. Fingers crossed anyway.

45 mins – Another curiosity. Sunderland, thanks to an unlikely series of injuries, have fielded a squad with no forwards at all away at Bolton today. Even more unlikely is that they’ve actually taken the lead.

36 mins – Notts County, sadly for Dagenham, equalise through a Greer own goal. It could make eunuchs out of our local League One side.

32 mins – North of the border, our adopted Scottish team, Ross County, take the lead thanks to a strike from Scott Morrison. The Jail End will be happy.

29 mins – Huge encouragement for D & R. Walsall fall behind at Southampton after conceding two goals in a minute. Just one Dagenham goal, as it currently stands, and they are safe!

26 mins – WYCOMBE WANDERERS 2, Southend United 1 Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. Ben Strevens puts Wycombe into a promotion place if it stays as it is and Adams Park erupts.

20 mins – WYCOMBE WANDERERS 1, Southend United 1 Oh no! Scott Donnelly, looking suspiciously offside, puts an equaliser away for the Chairboys.

15 mins – Wycombe Wanderers 0, SOUTHEND UNITED 1 Oh yes! Anthony Grant gives the Shrimpers a shock lead at Adams Park. Could the promotion party be stopped?

12 mins – WINGATE & FINCHLEY 2, Brentwood Town 0 It’s a long way back for Brentwood now. Smith doubles the Wingate lead. Ho hum.

12 mins – Minor boost for the Daggers. Notts County fall behind at home to the champion Segaulls.

11 mins – PETERBOROUGH UNITED 1, Dagenham & Redbridge 0 Disaster for the Daggers. Nathaniel Mendez-Laing opens the scoring for Posh. The trap door looms.

6 mins – WINGATE & FINCHLEY 1, Brentwood Town 0 Terrible start for ‘Wood. Laird gives the hosts the lead.

3.00pm – KICK OFF!

——————————

2.40pm – The permuations for Dagenham & Redbridge’s survival are this;

If the Daggers win, and either Notts County or Walsall don’t, they are safe.

If Dagenham draw, and Walsall lose, they are safe.

Anything less than either of these two scenarios and the Daggers go down into League 2.

On the face of it, with their two rivals away at the League 1 champions and a team needing something to get promoted, and Dagenham up against a side already in the play-offs and nothing to play for, the Victoria Road outfit have the least difficult task out of the three. Form suggests, however, that Walsall are more likely to get a decent result. It’s going to be nerve wracking.

——————————

2.30pm – Well, alright, just one more then. Good afternoon and welcome to finally the final day for definite finality. The Daggers might just stay up and the Shrimpers might just spoil a promotion party so it’s all set for an intriguing afternoon in the Football League.

It’s also play-off finals day in the Ryman League and today we’ll find out who joins East Thurrock United in the Premier Division from D1N. It could well be another local derby for the Rocks next season too. After finishing 21 points behind Needham Market, Brentwood Town came up with an unlikely semi-final win over the luckless Suffolk outfit. Their final opponents have, though, looked good for some time. A tough, tense, but potentially thrilling game awaits.

As ever, simply refresh the page every few minutes, as well as tuning into Jimmy Lindsay’s splendid show from 3pm on 97.8 or online, to get the best possible coverage of our local sides today.
