GIVEN the huge interest in football right across our borough one would have thought a Football League team was viable.
A team competing at this level has many advantages, including employment, but particularly in the area of social cohesion and community focus, especially for the younger members of our society.
It is well-known in many activities and service provision the physical make-up of the borough has militated against the provision of any one ‘stand alone’ facility serving the whole area and football is no exception.
There are five senior non-league teams at present, Grays Athletic, Thurrock, Tilbury, Aveley and East Thurrock, all of which draw a relatively small attendance to their matches, although all have large numbers of followers who watch the scores and league tables.
Grays are very near relegation from the top flight, the Blue Square Premier, and Thurrock on the verge of promotion to that pinnacle while the other teams have ambitions and strive to achieve at least that level.
In my opinion none will succeed for more than a few years while a parochial attitude remains.
They simply cannot generate enough income in the crowded environment to afford the overheads and the wages of players who are at the required standard.
Over the years much has been said about amalgamation of a couple of our local teams, Grays/Thurrock and Tilbury/Grays come to mind, but for a variety of reasons these have failed to come to fruition.
Yet if an amalgamation of two or even three of the senior sides did come about, then the possibility of a Football League team becomes a distinct possibility.
Maybe our elected council members could call a summit of all management boards and interested people to discuss a range of options and the provision of one stadium that would be a credit to the borough. – GEORGE WATTS, Crammavill Street, Grays.

Any one seen the letter in the gazette Mr Mott is talking out of his ***s or at least writing with a pencil stuck up it. UP the DOCKERS, don't think any one who supports Tilbury would want to merge with any one let alone Grays
