Dockers Go Marching On

By Anthony Mercer

Tilbury 1 Heybridge Swifts 0 (Att 73)

Tilbury continued there fine run with a hard working 1-0 victory over Heybridge Swifts, but the result made it 6 successive wins in all games for the Dockers.

After a quiet opening, the all important goal came midway through the first half when Tony Martin volleyed home well after a Danny Glozier ball. On 24 Lewis Goldbold for the visitors curled wide. Before the beak Tilbury had some good chances to increase the lead. On 36 Tony Martin picked up on a mistake and ran through only to see his low effort saved by Cowler. Seconds later captain Matt Game played a lovely splitting ball through to Martin who hit wide. The same player again went close on half time after a good team move.

Heybridge did come out after the break in buoyant mood and Billy Hunt struck the post. On 52 Tilbury striker Neil Richmond hit the side netting after a Glozier through ball. Tilbury continued to pressure their visitors with both Emiel Aiken and Andy Edmunds getting some good crosses in from the flanks. Tilbury gained control of the game and kept the ball well in the latter stages. With 7 minutes remaining Tony Martin was again in the thick of the action when he curled his effort just over the bar. In the final minute Tilbury's Jimmy Cook and Heybridge's George Doyle tussled for the ball and the referee sent Cook off and yellow card for Doyle, which was a strange decision. This did not deter Tilbury who ran out worthy winners.

The result sees Tilbury remain in 7th place, just outside the play off spot.

On Tuesday, Tilbury welcome Waltham Abbey for the first of two games between the sides in the next 2 weeks.
