Tilbury 1 Cambridge City 2 (att 150)
Tilbury opened the Isthmian league North programme with a defeat to new boys Cambridge City. Tilbury played 72 minutes with 10 men and with a little bit of luck, could have come away with a point.
It was a fast and furious opening, with Matt Sparrow going close inside 3 minutes when he hit over after a good move. A minute later Tommy Barton saw his low effort saved. On 15, Tilbury's best chance of the afternoon saw Ola Ogunwamide beat the offside trap and hit just wide of the keepers right-hand post.
The visitors started to get on top after Tilbury were reduced to 10 men, when Oli Spooner was shown a straight red for raising his hands on 18.
Just past the half hour, Cambridge took the lead when the excellent Adam Watkins hit from distance that took a slight deflection, but flew into the net.
Just before the break substitute Toby Armomolaran was pushed in the box, but the referee who must have missed the incident, waved away any penalty shout.
On 56 the visitors made it 2 when Matt Sparrow picked up a long ball and hit sweetly right footed home past Wheatley.
On 59 Tilbury again went close when Aromolaran hit a shot that was cleared off the line. Davis for Cambridge went close on 78 as Wheatley had to be at his best to save.
Tilbury despite a man down, looked to get back in the game and on 82 were rewarded when Toby Aromolaran
burst in the box and was brought down. George Sykes stepped up to score.
Tilbury pushed hard for an equaliser, but Cambridge defence kept strong to see them win on there debut in the division.
Tilbury are back in action on Tuesday night, when they travel to Great Wakering Rovers with a 7.45pm kick off.
