Tilbury emerged victorious from a dour battle at Theobolds Lane on Saturday thanks to Adam Vyse’s late goal.


The build-up to the match was overshadowed by the resignation of Steve Newing, Cheshunt’s second manager of the season whose reign after being appointed in late August failed to lift the Ambers from peril in the relegation zone of the Bostik North, while Tilbury went into the game on the back of two wins.
Both sides took time to adapt to conditions in a game played out on a surprisingly decent pitch given previous downpours, but greatly affected by a strong wind. Cheshunt played with it at their backs in the first half and consequently dominated much of the possession, though did little with it.
Tilbury’s threat going forward was minimal and as a result chances at either end were few and far between.
The two best chances of the half came in the closing five minutes and in quick succession. Firstly Tilbury’s Toby Aromolaran was given time and space to create a shooting opportunity on the edge of the box but his angled drive, possibly affected by the wind, swerved just wide of the upright. From the restart Cheshunt’s best player, the veteran Jason Hallett, looked up and from distance spotted visiting keeper Clarke Bogard, was off his line and he lofted the ball goalwards. The keeper rapidly backpedalled and with a leap got just enough contact on the ball to divert it past the post.
Cheshunt were better after the break and playing into the wind appeared to help their game, though there were still few movements of more than three passes in a game when neither side looked capable of creating opportunities.
What chances did come almost invariable came from mistakes and the cheap gift of possession and from one such Tilbury foul up midway through the half Hallett capitalised and broke free but through he rounded Bogard he ran out of space which caused him to have to turn to get a shot on goal and Dockers’ most impressive player, defender Abdul Salami, got back to make the block.
As the game entered the last ten minutes it seemed neither side would break the deadlock but from a free kick on the right from Kris Newby, the ball was drifted into the Cheshunt box and Vyse lost his marker to flick a header past keeper Montel Joseph for what proved to be the winner.
The result sees Tilbury move up to 14th. Tilbury return to action on Tuesday night when they welcome play off hopefuls Barking.
