Following last weeks impressive home win against our main championship rivals, this week the junior Dockers were up against the team immediately beneath them in the League - Cougars. The Harold Wood side have some very impressive results to their credit this season with the second-best goal difference (behind the Dockers!) so we knew this could be a difficult game.

The game was played on a bright, mild spring morning on an immaculate pitch at the Harold Wood Park. The pitch had an enormous slope on it which would be a good test for both sides' fitness.

The home side won the toss and elected to play down the slope in the first half. Tilbury began the game slowly, feeling their way into it. The Cougars forwards demonstrated plenty of pace in the early stages requiring the Tilbury back four to be on their mettle.

The game ebbed and flowed through the opening twenty minutes with neither side looking like taking the advantage. Tilbury's confidence was growing however as their superior physical fitness started to be the difference between the two sides. They began stroking the ball around in their customary style and began to create chances for their busy forwards (Tyler White and Paul Elliot) to run on to.

On thirty minutes, the Tilbury pressure paid dividends as Paul Elliot latched onto a back-pass before skilfully rounding the keeper before slotting the ball home. And that's how it remained for the rest of the half with Tilbury taking a deserved 1-0 lead into the interval.

The second-half began with the home side kicking up the slope. Tilbury looked keen to extend their advantage and five minutes into the second-half they got a deserved second goal. This was a fantastic team goal with superb passing down the left side involving Billy Smith, Joe Carter and James Wade leading to Paul Elliot being put through one-on-one with the keeper. Paul showed fantastic composure to chip the ball over the advancing keeper to double his tally.

Goal three was equally impressive five minutes later. Tilbury were awarded a free kick just inside the Cougars half which James Wade stepped up to take. James hit the ball cleanly with his right foot high into Cougars' box. The ball cleared everyone including the keeper and flew into the back of the net. 3-0 to the Dockers.

Tilbury got their first corner of the game fifteen minutes from the end. This was an in-swinging left-footed corner taken by the industrious Billy Smith. The ball came out to the other side of the area and was collected by Joe Carter. Joe brought the ball back to the edge of the box before curling a sublime effort onto the top corner, giving the keeper no chance. 4-0 and the Cougars were on the back foot.

Tilbury continued to pile on the pressure with the home side reduced to defending deeply and attacking on the counter. Good work by Craig Josling, Scott Thompson Jake Prosser and Billy Dahl in defence snuffed out most Cougars attacks. In addition, the Tilbury keeper gave another very impressive display with secure handling, excellent positioning and intelligent distribution throughout the game.

Excellent work by George Moore and Charlie Wilson down the right side almost resulted in more goals but for the linesman flagging for offside. Even Cameron Stansfield joined the attack from defence late on and set up a good opportunity for the excellent Ricky MacCabe, only for his shot to go narrowly wide.

Billy Smith completed the scoring five minutes before the end with a fantastic left-footed pile-driver from thirty yards out. The shot dipped under the crossbar giving the home keeper little chance.

This was another very impressive performance from the Tilbury side - every player played their part, with their physical fitness giving them a significant advantage. Their work ethic is superb with a never-say-die attitude which results in opposition sides being worn down - as was the case here.

This was a great game, played in great spirits throughout. The referee should also be praised for his performance, allowing the game to flow wherever possible.

This win keeps the Dockers in contention for winning the League title, and pulls them significantly clear of Cougars, their third place rivals. Well done lads, keep up the good work!

Romford beat Hartswood Stars 3-0 today which means its now definatly a 2 horse race. If the boys stay as focused and keep working hard in training as they have in the last few weeks they should be fine.
