Tilbury maintained their challenge at the top of the table with a comprehensive victory away to a strong Clarion side.

The match was played on a bright but gusty afternoon at Parsloes Park in Dagenham. The pitch was tiny and very bumpy with very long grass. In addition, the goals appeared little bigger than those used in mini-soccer. This together with the swirling wind was to be a good test for the Tilbury side in the closing stages of their title challenge.

Clarion kicked of with the wind at their back wearing their smart red and white kit and were very quick out of the blocks. The Tilbury side was put under immediate pressure as the home side pressed. After five minutes, Clarion's early pressure was rewarded - they won a corner on Tilbury's right side. This was swung into the box and evaded everyone before hitting the far post and rebounding into the net. This was an unfamiliar experience for the Tilbury side as they hadn't conceded a goal in the League since the middle of December last year!

Tilbury knew at this point they would have to dig deep to get a result from this game. They continued to press but a combination of confident goalkeeping, strong defending and slightly wayward finishing meant their equalising goal didn't come until twenty-five minutes into the game - sustained pressure resulted in Paul Elliott being put through one-on-one with the keeper at the edge of the box. He steadied himself before smashing a fierce half-volley past the advancing keeper. The score remained level until the half-time interval.

Tilbury kicked-off the second period and continued where they left off. Within five minutes of the restart they were awarded a penalty following a very clumsy challenge by a Clarion defender. James Wade stepped up to smash the ball into the bottom right corner giving the keeper no chance.

Tilbury's confidence continued to grow as they settled into their usual passing game. They piled pressure on the Clarion side who were now limited to attacking on the counter. A through ball to Ross Morbin was expertly finished as he lobbed the ball over the advancing keeper to give the junior Dockers a two-goal advantage.

Tilbury now looked likely to score with each attack. Indeed James Wade scored his second of the game (and Tilbury's fourth) with a well taken shot ten yards outside the box. James had spotted the home side's keeper several yards off his line and lofted the ball into the top corner over the stranded number one.

The fixture was settled five minutes before the end with Ross Morbin being put through following excellent work by George Moore in midfield. Ross calmly slotted the ball past the Clarion keeper to complete the scoring.

This was another well-earned victory and one which shows the strength of character of this Tilbury side following an early set-back. They totally dominated the second period and could (and should) have scored more goals. This result maintains pressure on League leaders Romford Youth with only a handful of games remaining. The remaining fixtures are all tough ones for the Tilbury side and will therefore prove crucial in determining the ultimate success of this season's challenge. Plenty of hard work therefore remains to be done.

Well done boys!

cheers Laughing
