This was the game we've all been eagerly awaiting - a top-of-the-table clash against League leaders Romford Borough Youth "B". The Romford side were unbeaten in the League prior to this game, indeed they beat us 2-1 in the reverse fixture earlier in the campaign. Tilbury felt hard done-by in the first game as they scored a perfectly valid equalising goal only for the linesman to give a very dubious offside decision. Our lads therefore needed little motivation for this fixture.

The game was played in bright, spring-like conditions and the pitch was again in good condition. Tilbury kicked off with the sun in their eyes and the wind at their backs. Tilbury wore their familiar white shirts whilst the visitors wore their smart yellow and blue kit.

Tilbury started with their usual passing game, stroking the ball around as they sought an opening in the visitors' defence. It was clear however that it was not going to be easy to break down their well-organised formation.

Paul Elliot was making a nuisance of himself up front with probing runs through the middle, whilst Billy Dahl and Scott Thompson were both brilliant in defence. The midfield looked strong and were a good match for Romford's.

Tilbury maintained the pressure and were rewarded with a goal after twenty minutes. An inch-perfect through-ball by Billy Smith was latched onto by Paul Elliot who outpaced the last defender before looping the ball over the advancing keeper. A very well-worked goal with a fantastic finish.

Tilbury had several further chances to score but were unable to extend their advantage. The Borough defence and in particular their excellent keeper were determined to keep the Tilbury attacks out.

In the second half, Romford piled on the pressure as they sought and equaliser. Tilbury defended superbly and continued to frustrate our opponents. Indeed we were limited to attacking on the counter and should have sewn the game up at least twice when the super-fast Tyler White raced through on goal with only the keeper to beat. On each occasion, the Romford keeper pulled off an outstanding save to keep his side in the game.

The referee ended the game with Tilbury getting the win they needed to maintain the pressure at the top of the table. We remain second in the League, one point behind Romford but with a game in-hand. With some difficult fixtures in the remaining weeks, the title race is still wide open.

The game was a fantastic spectacle for youth football - thoroughly entertaining and played in a great spirit by both teams. There is no doubt that both sides will be playing each other next season in the next division up. Thanks go to the Romford team for an excellent match which tested our resilience fully.

In summary, this was an excellent performance by the Tilbury side. Stout defending, excellent teamwork and clinical finishing resulted in another victory and our fourth consecutive clean sheet.

Well done lads, keep up the good work!
