Tilbury 0 Braintree Town 5 (Att 47)
Braintree Cruise Past Dockers In Senior Cup

Braintree Town finally became the last side to progress from Round Three of the Essex Senior Cup as they eased past Tilbury by five goals to nil in a long-awaited clash at Chadfields.
First-half goals from Jordan Cox, Steve Smith and Regan Pelling put last season’s runners-up in the ascendency before Mitch Brundle’s brace completed a comfortable success in the BBC Essex-supported competition.

Alongside Cox and Brundle, midfielder Dan Walker completed a trio of players who have been first-team regulars for the Iron in the Conference this season, and ultimately the visitors proved to be too strong for Ryman League North Division outfit Tilbury, who have found consistency hard to come by in the current campaign.

Braintree broke the deadlock on 20 minutes when a ball delivered from the left flank ricocheted kindly for frontman Cox and he finished the chance well with a confident strike into the bottom corner. From there, his side never looked back.

Skipper Brundle angled a 25-yard effort inches wide of the post and George Fullen also forced a good stop from home goalkeeper Ricky Millard after Pelling’s cut-back had seen Joe Maybanks’ fierce shot deflected inches wide as Braintree continued to pile on the pressure.

Their domination was eventually reflected by a second goal, which arrived on 40 minutes courtesy of a superb Smith strike. A loose ball dropped to the full-back fully 30 yards from goal and, finding himself in plenty of space, the Irishman thumped a fierce effort into the corner.

In first-half stoppage time the game was all but won as the Iron added a third thanks to Pelling’s looping header, which dropped inside the far post following Smith’s teasing cross to make it 3-0. The next goal, Braintree’s fourth, arrived eleven minutes after the interval and snuffed out any faint hopes of a Tilbury revival.

Pelling was involved once more as he forced his way into the penalty area before cutting the ball back for Brundle to curl home from six yards out. Forward Seye Okunlola also caused problems for the home defence after coming on for Cox and Millard produced the save of the evening to deny him, with the substitute having already sent a low, deflected effort just wide of the post.

Okunlola then forced an impressive double-stop from Millard before the home side’s best chances of the evening arrived in the closing stages. An inswinging Ryan Flack corner was headed agonisingly wide by Sam West before Ruben Duarte’s blocked shot fell kindly to Alvaro Cabral, but he couldn’t quite get a shot away under pressure and the Dockers were thwarted.

Then, in the final minute, Braintree compounded the hosts’ misery as they sealed their win thanks to Brundle, who buried his second goal of the evening into the bottom corner from Okunlola’s pass. The Iron will now host Thurrock in the final Fourth Round tie to be confirmed.

Tilbury: Ricky Millard, Matt Keiller, Elliott Johnson, Joe Nightingill, Sam West, Danny Smith (Perry Aldridge, 63), Alvaro Cabral (Ryan Flack, 76), Joe Sheldon, Ruben Duarte, Charlie Glesinger, Rimmel Daniel (Lewis Grantham, 76). Unused Substitutes: Harry Cook, Bradley Webb.
